Austrian physicians
Karl Landsteiner and Erwin Popper determine that polio is a contagious
disease spread by a virus shown magnified -- and that initial
infection confers immunity. A vaccine is therefore possible. A polio
epidemic in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1887 is one of several to strike
Europe and North America in the coming decades, the paradoxical result
of improved sanitation.
